Takashi Miike's Yatterman
I like Miike a lot, though I rarely wind up understanding what it is I’m watching.

X-Men: Children of the Atom, written by Joe Casey & illustrated by Steve Rude, Paul Ryan, and Michael Ryan. Uncanny X-Men: The Dark Phoenix Saga, written by Chris Claremont & illustrated by John Byrne. I’m taking a break from zombie horror and I’ve run straight back to my fanboy sanctuary.  I hadn’t read The Dark Phoenix Saga since elementary school, when a classmate...

The Walking Dead Vol 6: This Sorrowful Life, written by Robert Kirkman & illustrated by Charlie Adlard. The Walking Dead Vol 7: The Calm Before, by Kirkman & Adlard. The Walking Dead Vol 8: Made to Suffer, by Kirkman & Adlard. One interesting thing about these collections is that they don’t include the original covers to the single issues they reprints.  It’s just a...

White Teeth by Zadie Smith. Falling behind on my books. A few months ago, this lady asked me to recommend them a book, and I went through the store, showing them one after another. And then she turned to me and said, “You don’t read any books written by women, do you?” So now I’ve read at least one. And it was okay. Good Jamaican accents. But nothing extraordinary that...

I just witnessed this: DIPSHIT: How do you price your books? MANAGER: Generally half cover price, but it depends on the book. DIPSHIT: Hey, this isn’t half cover price!  I thought you said it was half cover price!  (It was Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which is a scare book to find used, and so priced accordingly.) MANAGER: I didn’t say that.  I said...

The Walking Dead Vol 1: Days Gone Bye, written by Robert Kirkman & illustrated by Tony Moore. The Walking Dead Vol 2: Miles Behind Us, written by Robert Kirkman & illustrated by Charles Adlard. The Walking Dead Vol 3: Safety Behind Bars, by Kirkman & Adlard. My hopeless, never-ending battle to catch up on graphic novels continues, like the shambling walk of a mindless zombie. This...

Save Me
To my left, a hipster totally just farted out loud in front of the new arrival shelves and is trying to act casual, even though I and everybody else heard it over the loud David Bowie music. In front of me, a fat nerd is on his knees, talking to the graphic novels, I turned up the Bowie do drown him out.  Right now he’s asking questions to a copy of American Splendor. To my right, a giant...

Self Serve
“Just so you know, the cookies aren’t self-serve.” Oh really, anorexic hipster barista? Then put them behind a fucking sneeze guard.  Or put up a fucking sign.  I’m not fluent in passive-aggressive postmodern ironic disinterested and self-absorbed body language.  Never mind the fact that everyone on Earth has had some kind of projectile phlegm disease for the last two...

Criminal Vol 3: The Dead and the Dying, written by Ed Brubaker & illustrated by Sean Phillips. And that wraps up my stack of Criminal trades.  Depressing noir comics.  Highly recommended.  Doubleplusgood.  I liked this volume’s structure, too, 3 perspectives on the same set of events. Now begins my quest to read the rest of the comics that I’ve had sitting on the shelf, waiting...

Daredevil: Born Again, written by Frank Miller & illustrated by David Mazzuchelli.  Remember the days when Frank Miller wasn’t so visibly crazy?  Good times!  But there’s bits of that madness even here.  Wolverine: Evolution, written by Jeph Loeb & illustrated by Simone Bianchi.  Ah, Jeph, what happened?   Lots of Marvel Comics so far in January.  I’m not doing it on...

“I came in looking for magical fantasy and went out with books about realism!” chuckled the old lady, genuinely tickled at how life sometimes threw these little curveballs. “Who would have guessed?” I thanked her sincerely, put her two realistic purchases, Tantra: Path of Ecstasy and Anam Cara: A Book of Celtic Wisdom into a bag, and sent her on her way. If a slightly...

Junk Monkey
junk monkey, originally uploaded by JNadiger. This creepy little fucker scared the crap out of me today, when I went downstairs to throw out my trash. I kind of want to bring him up to my apartment but I know my girlfriend would freak out. And I’m a little bit afraid that it’s cursed or something. I mean, it had to have been thrown out for a reason, right? Aside from being...

A Fighter's Heart: One Man's Journey Through the...
Sheridan covers everything from Mixed Martial Arts to boxing to kickboxing to dogfights even. Sheridan writes with humility and wit, and gives a pretty fair view at the good sides and bad sides of fighting and fighters. Probably the best book written about modern day combat sports.  Certainly better than the handful of ghost-written MMA autobiographies I’ve read so far.
