Quick thoughts on comics: Batwing #1
Meh. I don’t much care for Judd Winick’s writing. But oddly, my complaint with him is usually that he tries to soapbox with “controversial” issues that feel forced. The issues themselves are really important, the gay-bashing in Green Lantern, missing kids in Outsiders, but to me, they always felt really cheap and gimmicky.
Having said that, Winick is writing about motherfucking AFRICA and he can’t find anything other than low-level police corruption to talk about? He also does that really annoying thing where he refers to Africa as a whole unit. Africa’s not a country, it’s a lot of little fucked up countries squished really close together.
The art is nice, but I can’t help but feel that DC wasted a really good opportunity to do an amazing, topical superhero comic. I wish someone like Brian Wood could’ve written this instead.
Oh well.
