Quick thoughts on comics: Batwoman #1
FINALLY.
Loved it, but two heads are not better than one: the combo of J.H. Williams III & W. Haden Blackman aren’t as good a writer as Greg Rucka, and Rucka’s presence was sorely missed in this book. There are a few bits of clunky exposition, which I guess are necessary since this picks up from the Detective Comics run a few years ago.
The art is, of course, gorgeous, and J.H. Williams III does that incredible thing where he makes really weird double-page spreads very readable. Compare that to someone like Simone Bianchi, who is also a very talented artist, but can’t lay out a coherent page to save his life.
I hope this book is really successful and I hope that one day DC Comics can lure Greg Rucka back, if not to Batwoman, then at least to Gotham City, because I think he’s done his best work there.
