Quick thoughts on comics: Suicide Squad #1
I have always loved the concept of Suicide Squad, that super-criminals get sent on suicide missions for a chance at a reduced sentence, or whatever, but I’ve never really loved any of the incarnations that have been published over the years.
That lack of love continues with this. I don’t much care for the characters here, they weren’t presented particularly well, and the art was nothing special.
This book has two major controversies, one being Harley Quinn’s new lingerie outfit, the other being Amanda Waller no longer being a fat badass.
In terms of Harley Quinn, they seem to be wanting to chase Harley’s darker look found in the Arkham Asylum video games, and I get that, those games were awesome. Plus, they’re just clothes, and Harley seems to me the type of character who would change her look all the time.
In terms of The Wall, I guess they were going for the Angela Bassett look from the Green Lantern movie, but I wish they had kept her in her original shape and size, since she was such a distinct character.
But the fact remains that if we as fans are stalling on these two superficial points, then the book has failed to engage us on a deeper level.
