Quick thoughts on comics: Static Shock #1
I never read the original Milestone comics and I never saw the animated series, so I came to Static Shock with a blank slate.
The story did a good job of establishing Static’s new status quo: his secret identity, his family, his friends, his allies, his place in his city, very well. It also did a much better job than Mister Terrific at the science hero stuff. The villains are pretty weird, though. They look like Power Rangers. And at one point, I could’ve sworn that The Joker was standing in a room of villains, and no one said anything or talked to him, so I don’t know if that’s a thing. There’s a bit of a wannabe Spider-Man thing going where Static is always trying to make jokes during a fight, but he’s not that funny or cool, so I wish he’d stop it.
I used to really love Scott McDaniel’s art on Nightwing, but nothing he’s done since has really come close to being as good. It’s not bad here, I felt the book moved very quickly, but I am not digging it as much.
Not a bad start to a series, we’ll see how things go.
