Quick thoughts on comics: All-Star Western #1
I only read bits and pieces of Jimmy Palmiotti & Justin Gray’s previous run on Jonah Hex, but I did really enjoy it. So despite being a fan of all things Batman, I was a bit nervous about putting Jonah Hex in the middle of Gotham City, even if it was hundreds of years before Batman existed.
But they did a pretty good job. This is another book that feels like a really solid pilot episode. They set up the lead characters, they set up a bunch of supporting characters, they set up Gotham, who is still a shitty place to live no matter what year it is, and they set up a pretty convincing Big Bad to carry them through a couple of arcs.
Moritat’s art is really good, but I really hope All-Star Western can continue the Jonah Hex tradition of sneaking other excellent artists in for some guest issues from time to time.
