Quick thoughts on comics: Blackhawks #1
I have only read one other book by writer Mike Costa, the excellent Secret History of the Authority: Hawksmoor, and so I was looking forward to seeing this book, and have to admit I’m a little disappointed with what I’ve read.
There’s a lot of potentially interesting stuff, the Blackhawks are a squad of flying military specialists with all kinds of cool vehicles and weapons. There are lots of tough characters but they all seem to be kind of stereotypical and there isn’t one clear character to latch onto as our POV entry point.
The art by Graham Nolan and Ken Lashley feels kind of sloppy. Where the action should have a sense of intensity and velocity, it just feels messy. I think I’ll hold off on this series for now, and check back if I can find some issues on the cheap or if I find a used copy of the collection somewhere down the line.
