Quick thoughts on comics: Batman: The Dark Knight #1
The last volume of The Dark Knight, all four or five issues, were fucking awful. David Finch’s writing makes Tony Daniel look like Osamu fucking Tezuka. So it was the smartest move possible to bring in a writer like Paul Jenkins to help with plot and especially with the dialogue.
Having said that, the story is still kind of thin here. I don’t know if Jenkins is just spit-shining #1 and will have more influence going forward, but there’s a lot of action and not a lot of substance. The opening sequence was great, with Batman leaping into action to transform into Bruce Wayne, I thought that was a nice little twist. But both Batman #1 and Dark Knight #1 had Wayne giving a big speech. Batman #1’s speech echoes that issue’s central theme, and the Dark Knight #1’s speech was just a bunch of words for the sake of having words.
David Finch’s art is a good fit for Batman, and it’s decent here, but his art has honestly looked better. I’ll check out another issue or two, but like my following of Detective, it’s more out of a weird loyalty to Batman than it is about anything the creative team is doing.
