Donburi Boy

Quick thoughts on comics: Teen Titans #1
I really enjoyed Lobdell’s Superboy #1. I really hated Lobdell’s Red Hood and the Outlaws #1. I am kind of indifferent to his Teen Titans #1.
I do appreciate that Lobdell is taking the slow-burn introduction to the team, introducing them one-by-one instead of chucking a bunch of them together right at the start. I think that’s the right play. And I like that Tim Drake is taking charge and being a bit smug while showing off how smart he is.
And I don’t know if he’s doing it intentionally but having the Titans go up against Superboy early on kind of mirrors the Justice League and their early confrontation with Superman.
I’ve always had a soft spot for Brett Booth’s art, though it’s more nostalgia than appreciation. I really like his Image Comics Backlash series from way back in the day. His art got really strange and all his people are stretched out now. He has some trouble with angles and proportion and storytelling. But for some reason, I still like it.
This book is very much on the bubble for me, I could cancel it at any moment. What’s more, if this book and Superboy remain tightly tied together, Teen Titans sucking could mean I stop getting Superboy. Which I suppose aren’t the highest of stakes, but there it is.
